Mango Sticky Rice Bowls in Hawaii: The Viral Trend You Need to Try This Summer (2026)

Mango Hawaii

Hawaii has a new food obsession this summer — and if you haven’t heard about it yet, you’re about to.
Meet the mango sticky rice bowl from Down to Earth Hawaii: the viral treat that locals lined up for, and that visitors are now making a point to try.

The Viral Trend: Down to Earth’s Mango Sticky Rice Bowl

Mango sticky rice is a classic Thai dessert — glutinous rice soaked in sweet coconut cream, topped with fresh mango.
Simple, but deeply satisfying.
Down to Earth took that idea and gave it a Hawaii twist: reimagined as a smoothie and smoothie bowl, blending the flavors of a beloved Asian dessert with Hawaii’s health-conscious food culture.

In June 2025, Down to Earth launched the Mango Sticky Rice Smoothie — and locals lined up.
The buzz spread fast online, and unlike most limited drinks that disappear after a few weeks, this one stayed on the menu.
Then in spring 2026, they launched the Mango Sticky Rice Smoothie Bowl — a thicker, spoonable version with even more going on.

What’s in the Smoothie Bowl?

  • Tapioca Pudding (the “rice”)
  • Coconut Sorbet
  • Chopped Mango
  • Passion-Mango Juice
  • Coconut Cream
  • Toasted Coconut
  • Fresh Mint

It’s vegan, gluten-free, and you can add a protein and creatine blend if you want a boost. It’s also, honestly, one of the more photogenic things you’ll eat in Hawaii.

Smoothie vs. Smoothie Bowl: Which Should You Order?

The smoothie is drinkable and great on the go. The bowl is thicker and spoonable — better for sitting down and savoring.
If it’s your first time, the bowl is the move.

Down to Earth Locations for Visitors

Kakaako (most convenient from Waikiki / Ala Moana)

  • 500 Keawe St, Honolulu (About a 10-minute drive from Waikiki )
  • Hours: 7am–10pm daily

If you’re staying on the east side of the island, the Kahala location is convenient — it’s on the 4th floor of Kahala Mall.

Hawaii Mango Season: Why Summer Is Special

Mango season in Hawaii runs from roughly May through October, with peak ripeness in July and August.
And if you’re visiting during that window, you’ll notice it — mango trees are everywhere on the island, from front yards and roadsides to parking lots.
Backyard mango trees are a staple of Hawaii home life, and during peak season, neighbors often share their harvest at farmers markets or roadside stands.

Unlike pineapple or papaya — which are available year-round — mango has a real window.
The flavor of a freshly picked local mango is something most mainland visitors have never experienced, and it makes everything taste better, including that smoothie bowl.

Where to find local mangoes on Oahu:

  • KCC Farmers Market (Diamond Head, Saturdays)
  • Kapiolani Community College Farmers Market
  • Down to Earth (all Oahu locations carry local fruit in season)

Make It at Home: Mango Sticky Rice in Your Hawaii Condo

One of the best things about staying in a condo or vacation rental in Hawaii is having a kitchen.
And mango sticky rice is surprisingly simple to make — especially if your condo has a rice cooker (most do).

You can pick up everything you need at Down to Earth or any local grocery store.

Simple Mango Sticky Rice Recipe

Ingredients (serves 2):

  • 1 cup glutinous (sweet) rice
  • 1 cup coconut cream
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1–2 ripe Hawaiian mangoes, sliced
  • Toasted coconut flakes (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse rice until water runs clear. Cook in your rice cooker with 1 cup water.
  2. While rice cooks, combine coconut cream, sugar, and salt in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir until sugar dissolves — don’t boil.
  3. When rice is done, pour the warm coconut cream over it and stir gently. Let it absorb for 20–30 minutes.
  4. Serve with fresh sliced mango on top. Add toasted coconut if you have it.

Pro tip: Use the ripest mango you can find. A fresh local mango from a farmers market will taste completely different from anything you’d find at home — and that’s the whole point.
